Understanding 3-Point Percentage

Because three-pointers are worth 50% more than a standard field goal, players don't have to shoot as high of a percentage for the shot to be incredibly valuable to their team's offense.

  • The Math Advantage: Shooting 33.3% from three-point range generates exactly the same number of points as shooting 50.0% on two-point shots!
  • League Averages: In the modern NBA, the league average 3-point percentage usually hovers right around 35% to 36%.
  • The 40% Club: If a player shoots 40% or higher from deep on high volume, they are considered an elite floor spacer and sniper.
  • Historic Marks: Sustaining a 3-point percentage above 45% over a full season is incredibly rare. The all-time career leader in NBA history is Steve Kerr at 45.4%!
