4th of July Countdown
Let freedom ring! Count down the exact time remaining until America's Independence Day celebrations.
The History of Independence Day
Observed annually on July 4th, Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
- The Big Vote: While we celebrate on the 4th, the Continental Congress actually voted for independence on July 2nd, 1776. John Adams believed July 2nd would be the date celebrated by future generations!
- A Grand Celebration: Fireworks have been part of the tradition since the very first anniversary in 1777, when a 13-gun salute was fired and "a grand exhibition of fireworks" was displayed in Philadelphia.
- Hot Dog Heaven: Americans consume approximately **150 million hot dogs** every 4th of July. That's enough to stretch from D.C. to L.A. five times over!
- Coincidence? Three U.S. Presidents-Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe-all died on July 4th. Jefferson and Adams actually died on the same day in 1826, the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.
