BMI vs. BSA: What's the difference?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m2. It is used universally by doctors to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Body Surface Area (BSA) calculates the total surface area of the human body in square meters. While BMI is used for general health screening, BSA is used for critical clinical tasks, such as calculating the exact dosages for chemotherapy, intravenous fluids, and other specialized medications because it is a more accurate indicator of metabolic mass than body weight alone.

Note: This calculator uses the industry-standard Mosteller formula for BSA: &radq;((Height(cm) × Weight(kg)) / 3600).
