What is Basal Metabolic Rate?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body needs to function while at a state of total rest in a temperate environment. This energy is used to maintain vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, nervous system, intestines, liver, lungs, sex organs, muscles, and skin.

  • The "Bed" Test: Imagine staying in bed for 24 hours without moving a single muscle. Your BMR is the number of calories you would burn in that time just to stay alive.
  • Mass and Metabolism: People with more muscle mass generally have a higher BMR because muscle tissue requires more energy to maintain than fat tissue.
  • Age Factor: BMR usually decreases as you age because lean muscle mass naturally declines over time.
  • TDEE vs BMR: While BMR is your "idling" speed, your **TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)** is your BMR plus the calories burned through movement and exercise.
