BMR Calculator
Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate-the exact number of calories your body burns just to stay alive at rest.
What is Basal Metabolic Rate?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body needs to function while at a state of total rest in a temperate environment. This energy is used to maintain vital organs such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, nervous system, intestines, liver, lungs, sex organs, muscles, and skin.
- The "Bed" Test: Imagine staying in bed for 24 hours without moving a single muscle. Your BMR is the number of calories you would burn in that time just to stay alive.
- Mass and Metabolism: People with more muscle mass generally have a higher BMR because muscle tissue requires more energy to maintain than fat tissue.
- Age Factor: BMR usually decreases as you age because lean muscle mass naturally declines over time.
- TDEE vs BMR: While BMR is your "idling" speed, your **TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)** is your BMR plus the calories burned through movement and exercise.
