How Electrical Billing Works
Electric companies bill you based on Kilowatt-Hours (kWh). One kilowatt-hour means you used 1,000 watts of power for exactly one hour.
The Math:
- Step 1: Multiply your appliance's wattage by the hours used per day. (e.g., A 1500W heater used for 8 hours = 12,000 Watt-Hours).
- Step 2: Divide by 1,000 to get Kilowatt-Hours. (12,000 / 1000 = 12 kWh).
- Step 3: Multiply by your utility rate. (12 kWh × $0.16 = $1.92 per day).
Pro Tip: Beware of "Phantom Loads." Many modern electronics (like TVs, game consoles, and chargers) consume a small amount of electricity even when turned "off" but left plugged in. Unplugging devices or using a smart power strip can reduce your monthly bill!
