Understanding Field Goal Percentage
Field Goal Percentage (FG%) is the most fundamental shooting metric in basketball. It accounts for all shots taken during live play (layups, mid-range jumpers, and 3-pointers).
- What is Excluded? Free throws do not count as field goal attempts, as they are undefended. Also, if a player is fouled while shooting and misses, it does not count as a field goal attempt (unless the shot goes in!).
- Guards vs. Big Men: A player's position heavily influences what a "good" FG% is. Centers and Power Forwards take most of their shots right next to the basket, so an elite big man will often shoot over 55% to 60%. Point Guards shoot further from the hoop, so shooting 45% to 50% is considered elite for a guard.
- The 50-40-90 Club: This is the holy grail for basketball shooters. It means a player finished a season shooting at least 50% on Field Goals, 40% on 3-Pointers, and 90% on Free Throws. It is incredibly difficult to achieve!
