Understanding Fielding Stats

Fielding Percentage tells you how often a player makes the play they are supposed to make, without booting the ball or throwing it away.

  • Putouts (PO): Awarded to the fielder who physically records the out (e.g., catching a fly ball, or the first baseman catching a throw to step on the base).
  • Assists (A): Awarded to fielders who touch the ball before a putout is recorded by a teammate (e.g., the shortstop fielding a ground ball and throwing it to first base gets an Assist).
  • Total Chances (TC): Simply the sum of Putouts, Assists, and Errors. It represents every single time the ball came to the fielder and they had a chance to make a play.
  • Benchmarks by Position: First basemen and catchers almost always have fielding percentages near .990 to .995 because most of their chances are easy catches. Shortstops and third basemen have much harder throws, so an elite FPCT for them might be around .975 to .980.
