What is a Cord of Wood?

In the firewood industry, a **Full Cord** is a legally defined unit of measurement. Many sellers use confusing terms like "face cord," "rick," or "truckload" to hide the fact that you are receiving less wood than you think.

  • Full Cord: A stack of wood that measures exactly **128 cubic feet**. The standard dimensions are **8 feet long, 4 feet high, and 4 feet deep**.
  • Face Cord (or Rick): This is not a legal measurement. It typically refers to a stack that is 8 feet long and 4 feet high, but only **one log deep** (usually 16 inches). A face cord is usually exactly **1/3 of a full cord**.
  • The Air Factor: A cord is measured by the total space the stack occupies. While some air is expected, a stack that is thrown loosely into a truck bed (a "thrown cord") usually requires 180 cubic feet of space to equal 128 cubic feet of stacked wood.

Buyer Beware: If you paid for a "Cord" but your stack is only 16 inches wide, you only received 33% of a cord!
