Understanding Free Throw Percentage
Free throws are the only uncontested shots in basketball, making FT% a pure indicator of a player's shooting mechanics and mental focus.
- The Formula: Simply divide the number of made shots by the number of total attempts, and multiply by 100 to get the percentage.
- The "Hack-a-Shaq" Line: If a player shoots below 60%, opposing teams will often foul them intentionally late in games because it mathematically hurts the opposing team's offense.
- League Averages: In the NBA, the league average free throw percentage usually hovers right around 75% to 78%.
- The 90% Club: Shooting 90% or higher for an entire season is considered elite territory. Only the greatest shooters in history (like Stephen Curry, Steve Nash, and Mark Price) consistently live in this zone.
