How Your Power Bill Works
Electric companies don't bill you for "Watts," they bill you for Kilowatt-hours (kWh). This is a measurement of both power and time.
- The Math:
(Watts × Hours Used) ÷ 1000 = kWh. - Example: A 1500 Watt space heater running for 8 hours uses 12,000 Watt-hours, which is 12 kWh.
- The Cost: If your utility company charges 16 cents ($0.16) per kWh, that single space heater costs you $1.92 every single day, or nearly $60 a month!
- Phantom Loads: Devices like TVs, cable boxes, and microwaves often draw small amounts of power (5-15W) 24 hours a day, even when "turned off." This can quietly add up to $50-$100 a year.
