Medically Recognized Formulas

There is no single "perfect" weight, which is why this calculator uses an average of the four most common formulas used by clinicians. All formulas begin with a base weight for a 5-foot-tall person and add weight for every additional inch.

  • Devine Formula: The most commonly used formula in clinical settings to calculate dosages for medications.
  • Robinson & Miller Formulas: Modern refinements to the Devine formula designed to better represent statistical averages in the general population.
  • Hamwi Formula: A traditional formula often used by nutritionists and dietitians.
  • Frame Size: People with a "Large" frame have wider bones and more muscle potential, which can safely add roughly 10% to their ideal weight, while "Small" frames may be healthier at a lower range.
