🟣 Lilac Chaser Illusion

Stare at the center cross (+) for about 20 seconds without blinking or moving your eyes. Watch as a ghostly green dot appears, followed by the purple dots disappearing!

🧠 How is this possible?

This illusion uses two fascinating quirks of human vision:

1. Negative Afterimages: Your eyes become "tired" of seeing purple in those specific spots. When the purple disappears, your brain shows you the opposite (complementary) color-which is green!

2. Troxler's Fading: If you keep your gaze fixed on the center, the purple dots in your peripheral vision eventually stop being "new info" to your brain. Your visual system begins to ignore them as background noise, making them fade into the gray background until they seem to vanish entirely.

About the Lilac Chaser Illusion

Your eyes and brain are constantly working together to interpret the world around you, but they can easily be tricked! The Lilac Chaser illusion (sometimes called the Pac-Man illusion) is a fascinating visual experiment that proves you can't always believe what you see. By simply staring at the center cross for 15 to 20 seconds, the purple dots will vanish, and a ghostly green dot will appear to race around the circle.

The Science Behind the Magic

  • Color Adaptation (The Green Ghost): Your eyes have specialized color receptors called cones. When you stare at the purple (lilac) dots for too long, the cones responsible for seeing that specific color become fatigued. When a dot briefly disappears, your tired eyes overcompensate by showing you the opposite color on the color wheel: a bright, glowing green!
  • Troxler's Fading (The Vanishing Act): Discovered by Swiss physician Ignaz Paul Vital Troxler in 1804, this phenomenon occurs when you fixate your gaze on a single point. Your brain eventually decides that the unchanging objects in your peripheral vision are unimportant background noise, causing the purple dots to completely fade from your awareness.
  • Interactive Adjustments: Use the sliders in our tool to change the speed of the chaser and the size of the dots. Notice how moving the dots faster or making them larger changes how quickly your brain falls for the illusion!
