Marine Food Chain Builder
Drag and drop organisms to construct a valid flow of energy through the ocean ecosystem.
Energy flows from the sun, to producers, and up the chain. Build a valid 4-step food chain below!

Understanding Marine Food Chains
A food chain shows how energy and nutrients flow from one living thing to another in an ecosystem. In the ocean, this process usually follows a specific hierarchy:
- Producers: The foundation of the chain. These organisms (like Phytoplankton or Kelp) use sunlight to make their own food through photosynthesis.
- Primary Consumers: Herbivores that eat the producers. Examples include Zooplankton, Sea Urchins, and small schooling fish.
- Secondary Consumers: Carnivores that eat the primary consumers. This includes larger fish, squids, and seals.
- Apex Predators: The top of the food chain. These animals (like Great White Sharks or Orcas) have no natural predators of their own.
Note: In reality, marine ecosystems are complex "Food Webs" where animals eat many different things, but building a linear chain is the best way to understand the flow of energy!
