Why OBP Matters More Than Batting Average

For decades, Batting Average was the gold standard. However, modern baseball analytics (Sabermetrics) proved that On-Base Percentage is actually a much better indicator of a player's offensive value.

  • A Walk is as Good as a Hit: In OBP, a walk (BB) is treated equally to a hit. Getting on base avoids an out and gives the team a chance to score, regardless of how the player got there.
  • The Denominator: Notice that Sacrifice Flies (SF) are included in the denominator. If you hit a fly ball that scores a run, it doesn't hurt your Batting Average, but it does lower your OBP because you made an out instead of getting on base.
  • Benchmarks: In the MLB, an OBP around .320 is considered average. If a player hits .360, they are an excellent hitter. Anything over .400 puts a player in the elite MVP conversation (think Juan Soto or Aaron Judge).
