The 3-Layer Patio Foundation

A patio is only as good as the ground underneath it. To prevent your pavers from sinking or shifting over time, you must follow the industry-standard layering technique:

  • Layer 1: Crushed Stone Base (The Structure): This is the most important layer. It should be "3/4-minus" crushed stone. This provides the drainage and strength to support weight. 4 inches is the standard for foot traffic.
  • Layer 2: Leveling Sand (The Bedding): You should spread exactly 1 inch of coarse sand (not play sand) over your compacted base. *Crucial:* Do not compact this sand before laying pavers; the pavers will be set into it later.
  • Layer 3: The Pavers: Lay your pavers in your desired pattern. This calculator includes a 10% waste factor to account for the "half-pavers" you'll need to cut at the edges.

Pro Tip: Once the pavers are down, sweep "Polymeric Sand" into the joints and mist with water. This hardens like glue, keeping weeds out and pavers in place.
