Understanding Points Per Game
Points Per Game (PPG) is the most commonly referenced basketball statistic. It gives a clear picture of a player's offensive output and reliability on a nightly basis.
- Formatting: Unlike percentages which use three decimal places, averages like PPG, RPG (Rebounds), and APG (Assists) are traditionally displayed to exactly one decimal place (e.g., 27.4).
- Benchmarks: A player scoring 10 to 15 PPG is typically a solid starter. Hitting 20 PPG usually puts a player in the All-Star conversation. Scoring 30+ PPG often wins the league scoring title and guarantees MVP consideration.
- Historic Marks: Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain share the record for the highest career PPG in NBA history at an incredible 30.1 PPG.
- The Untouchable Record: During the 1961-1962 season, Wilt Chamberlain averaged an impossible 50.4 PPG for the entire season!
