How to Simplify Ratios

Simplifying a ratio makes it easier to understand and work with. It's essentially the same process as simplifying a fraction.

  • Find the GCD: To simplify a ratio, you must find the **Greatest Common Divisor (GCD)**-the largest whole number that divides both numbers evenly.
  • Divide Both Sides: Divide both numbers in your ratio by that GCD. For example, in the ratio **120:80**, the GCD is **40**. Dividing both by 40 gives you **3:2**.
  • What is a Unit Ratio? A unit ratio is a ratio where one of the numbers is **1**. This is perfect for comparing different sets of numbers side-by-side.
  • Handling Decimals: If you enter decimals, this tool will first convert them to whole numbers by multiplying by powers of 10 before finding the simplest whole-number ratio.
