Understanding Hardiness Zones
The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a specific location.
- It's All About the Cold: The zones are based on the average annual extreme minimum temperature over a 30-year period. It tells you how cold it gets, not how hot it gets.
- The "A" and "B" Subzones: Each zone is technically split into 'a' and 'b' subzones (representing 5°F increments). For this tool, we grouped them into the primary 10°F zones for easier reading.
- Microclimates: Even if you are in Zone 6, a spot next to a brick wall facing the sun might act like Zone 7, while a low-lying valley in your yard might act like Zone 5. Always observe your specific environment!
