Density Matters: Why Rocks Weigh Differently

Buying gravel is more complicated than buying mulch because rocks are sold by Weight (Tons), not just volume. If you use a generic calculator, you might overbuy or underbuy by thousands of pounds.

  • Pea Gravel & River Rock: These are rounded, smooth stones. They settle together fairly well and weigh about 2,600 to 2,700 pounds per cubic yard.
  • Crushed Granite: Because these rocks are jagged, they lock together tightly with very few air pockets. This makes them significantly heavier-often reaching 2,900 pounds per yard.
  • Lava Rock: This material is volcanic and full of air bubbles. It is extremely light. One cubic yard of lava rock weighs less than half as much as granite (only about 1,200 pounds).
  • Tonnage Tip: Most delivery trucks charge by the load. If your project requires 1.8 tons, you will likely have to pay for a full 2-ton delivery.
