Understanding Save Percentage (SV%)
Save Percentage is the most widely used metric for measuring a goalie's effectiveness in hockey. It simply tells you what percentage of shots directed at the net were successfully stopped.
- What is a Shot on Goal (SOG)? A shot on goal is ONLY counted if the puck goes into the net, or would have gone into the net if the goalie hadn't stopped it. Shots that hit the post, miss the net wide, or are blocked by a defenseman do NOT count as Shots on Goal.
- League Averages: In the modern NHL, the average save percentage typically hovers right around .900 to .908 depending on the season.
- The Elite Tier: Stopping .920 or more of the shots faced over a full season is considered excellent and usually places a goalie among the league leaders. Hitting .930+ often results in winning the Vezina Trophy (awarded to the league's best goaltender).
- Formatting: Just like a baseball batting average, Save Percentage is displayed to exactly three decimal places, dropping the leading zero (e.g., .915 instead of 0.915).
