Understanding Shot Accuracy

In soccer, it doesn't matter how hard you kick the ball if it sails into the stands. Shot Accuracy measures a forward's ability to keep the ball on frame, forcing the goalkeeper to make a save or conceding a goal.

  • What is a Shot on Target? A shot on target is any goal attempt that goes into the net, or would have gone into the net if not stopped by the goalkeeper (or the last defender on the goal line).
  • What is Off Target? Shots that hit the post or crossbar without going in do not count as shots on target! Shots blocked by defenders outside the goal area are also typically considered off target or blocked.
  • League Standards: Across the top European leagues (like the Premier League), an average striker has a shot accuracy of around 35% to 40%.
  • Elite Clinical Finishers: The best goalscorers in the world consistently hit 45% to 55%. Reaching 60% over a full season means a player is extraordinarily clinical and rarely wastes a chance.
