How are Solar Times Calculated?
Sunrise and sunset are defined as the moment when the upper edge of the sun's disk touches the horizon. Due to atmospheric refraction, the sun actually looks higher than it truly is, meaning we see the sun for a few minutes before it technically rises and after it technically sets.
- Zenith: For standard sunrise/sunset, the zenith angle is set to 90.83 degrees to account for both the radius of the sun and the bending of light in the atmosphere.
- Timezones: This tool uses your local UTC offset. Ensure your offset is correct for Daylight Savings Time if applicable.
- The Visualizer: The arc represents the sun's path from sunrise (left) to sunset (right). The yellow dot shows the current relative position of the sun based on the current time of day.
