How is Thanksgiving Calculated?
In the United States, Thanksgiving is not on a fixed date. Instead, it follows a specific calendar rule that has been in place since 1941.
- The Rule: Thanksgiving is observed on the **fourth Thursday of November**. Because months can start on any day of the week, the date can fall anywhere between November 22nd and November 28th.
- The History: Originally, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the last Thursday of November. However, in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it up one week to lengthen the Christmas shopping season during the Great Depression. This caused confusion, leading Congress to officially set the fourth Thursday as the legal holiday.
- Gratitude & Community: Beyond the turkey and football, the holiday is centered on the harvest and expressing thanks for the year's blessings.
