What are Total Bases?

Total Bases (TB) simply tallies up the bases a batter has collected over a specific timeframe based solely on their hits.

  • Calculating Singles: If you only know your Total Hits and your extra-base hits, you can easily find your singles by subtracting the extra-base hits from your Total Hits. This calculator does that for you automatically!
  • What is excluded? A player does not earn Total Bases for walks, hit-by-pitches, stolen bases, or advancing on an error. It only measures bases earned directly off the bat.
  • Why does it matter? It is the numerator used to calculate Slugging Percentage (Total Bases divided by At Bats).
  • Historic Numbers: In a modern 162-game MLB season, accumulating 300 Total Bases is a benchmark for an excellent All-Star caliber season. Reaching 400 Total Bases is extremely rare; the last player to do it was Aaron Judge in 2022 (with 391).
