Why WHIP is Better Than ERA
While Earned Run Average (ERA) is the most famous pitching stat, many analysts prefer WHIP because it isolates the pitcher's exact performance.
- Avoiding Bad Luck: If a pitcher gives up three hits, but the defense turns a triple play, their ERA stays 0.00. Alternatively, an outfielder losing a ball in the sun might lead to an "earned" run. WHIP ignores these defensive variables and focuses strictly on: Did you let the batter get on base?
- Partial Innings: Remember, throwing 5.1 innings means 5 innings and 1 out (which is mathematically $5.333$ innings). This calculator converts those outs seamlessly to ensure your WHIP is perfectly accurate.
- Benchmarks: A WHIP around 1.30 is considered an MLB average. If a pitcher has a WHIP under 1.10, they are an Ace. A WHIP below 1.00 over a full season is a historic achievement (meaning they allow less than one baserunner per inning!).
