How are Ties Calculated?

In sports where ties are impossible (like baseball or basketball), the formula is simple: Wins ÷ Total Games. But what happens in leagues like the NFL or European soccer where ties are common?

  • The Half-Win Rule: Most major sporting leagues (including the NFL) treat a tie as "half of a win and half of a loss."
  • The Formula: To calculate this properly, you multiply your ties by 0.5, add them to your wins, and then divide by your total games played.
  • Formatting: Just like a batting average, Win Percentage is almost always displayed to exactly three decimal places, without the leading zero (unless the team has a mathematically perfect 1.000 season).
